Cutting Corners

Drew Schaefering shares his approach to creating a seamless shape using pivoting, diagonal sectioning and freehand cutting techniques. You will learn two salon-friendly haircuts inspired by Drew’s work on-set and backstage at fashion shows. Follow along like a classic look-and-learn or, better yet, with your own mannequin as a hands-on workshop.

You Will Learn:

  • Hand and body positioning techniques
  • How to create interior movement
  • When to cut corners and when to leave them
  • How to slice, channel and twist cut

Lesson 1: Long Layers

  • Create shape without losing density at the perimeter
  • Cut off corners with purpose
  • Remove weight and personalize your cut
  • Create natural volume and texture with your hands and a paddle brush

Lesson 2: Shag Inspired Mid-Length

  • Concave layering techniques
  • Personalize without removing length
  • Visually remove weight
  • Enhance styling with product and hot tools

“Drew explains how he cuts very well. Very easy to understand. However, it would be better if he also taught how he flips the scissors while holding a comb in one hand.”

— ITTIPAT A.

“I loved this class! I am a seasoned hairdresser and definitely walked away with new, fresh approaches to my haircuts. Both of these cuts are salon friendly. Drew gave some awesome tips on cutting thicker hair in a timely manner, that I know, will save me from running behind, as I normally do! In my opinion, the brick wall, as a background, did not make it difficult to see at all (just wanted to address that since another viewer said that it was difficult to see) I dig Drew's chill, very laid back, but incredibly passionate vibe. Thank you sooooooo much!”

— MARISSA V.

“Great class! I shared with our apprentices for a new way to think of producing layers. I learned originally using large sections big combs and love that you can get a shape in quick allowing time to go back and take tighter or looser if needed and then also have plenty of time to detail at the ends.”

— GWENN L.

“Looks like great technique but reddish blonde against a brick wall ? low lighying and shot from far away? Very difficult to see.”
